i’ve briefly returned to tumblr because this is way too long for a facebook status but i’m currently in a foriegn country without the requisite language skills to work through this sentiment to any of the people around me. so here you go, dear internet.
1. International Women’s Day – goodness gracious, I’m not sure why this is frustrating to me exactly and right at this moment, but I think it’s actually one of those OH MY GOD WE ACTUALLY NEED TO HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY TO MAKE UP FOR THE FACT THAT BEING A WOMAN ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD SUCKS moods. Like really. I am seeing all of these “Happy International Women’s Day” statuses – and I’m like, actually, I’d like an apology. I’d like an apology for whatever role you’ve played in perpetuating misogyny and rape culture and inequity. And I would like to not be dismissed as an angry feminist or PMS-ing woman for asking for an apology. I would like it to be recognized for once that, however unjust this status might be/however much I wish it wasn’t so, women are unequal. We’re paid less, we’re abused more, we’re objectified constantly, we’re bitchy or a push-over, we care too much or we don’t do enough. We’re mutilated and beaten and raped. We’re told that we can’t, that we shouldn’t. That our identity is mother, daughter, sister, wife – not a human, a person with a soul and identity that is utterly her own. I spend so much time wishing that more people cared about these “women’s issues” that I’m constantly preoccupied with – but I think the only thing worse than indifference is insincerity. Don’t hide behind the fact that you celebrate International Women’s Day to absolve yourself of the role that we all play in perpetuating sexism. Celebrate, but also could you ‘fess up and get to work? And please, could I just have an apology? And then get to hear about something you’ll do to make it better for me and the rest of us? ‘Cause I’m really tired of this struggle.
*disclaimer – a lot of wonderful women and men are writing and posting and communicating really meaningful messages about International Women’s Day and so many women in the world deserve a day of celebration – I hope you won’t take offense to this.
**disclaimer 2 – i really didn’t want to post this initially because i am so aware of the many amazing activists who are fighting so hard for gender equality, but i think they’ll understand my sentiment and won’t hold it against me. Besides my paranoid fear of upsetting people is a prime example of gender socialization at it’s finest, so I’m bucking it.
***disclaimer 3 – I actually do love being a girl/woman. See – Eve Ensler’s I am an Emotional Creature. It’s just this inequality thing that really pisses me off.
stop that cat. you are not a president. you can’t spell ‘emancipation’ OR ‘proclamation’.
